KELLY — LaQuancey Rashon Murphy, 27, of 12008 Twisted Hickory Road, Bladenboro, has been arrested on numerous state and federal charges after holding five people hostage in the Kelly area Tuesday night and into the early morning hours on Wednesday, according to Bladen County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Phillip Little.
“The first 911 call came in on Sunday night around 8 p.m. from the residence of Stephanie Porter, located at 4708 Natmore Road in Kelly, reporting shots fired near her residence,” Little said.
As officers were in route to the scene, one of the sheriff’s deputies wrecked his patrol car. According to Little, the vehicle was severely damaged, but the officer was not injured.
By the time officers arrived at Porter’s home, the shooter had eluded the deputies.
“The next call placed to 911 was on Tuesday night, the caller stated five people were being held in the home and he (Murphy) would not let them leave the house,” said Little.
Deputies arrived at the Kelly residence and negotiated with Murphy for a little more than an hour before he released the hostages, according to Little.
Bladen County deputies received help from the Wilmington Police Department with the use of their SABLE helicopter to help locate Murphy. Little told the Journal Murphy had sneaked out of the doublewide mobile home and was located by the Wilmington Police Department’s Helicopter infrared equipment. Murphy was found behind deputies on his belly with a loaded shotgun, according to Little.
Once Murphy was arrested, investigators and deputies examined the Porter residence and found numerous bullet holes in the mobile home, Little added.
Murphy is being held in the Bladen County Jail without bond for 48 hours after his arrest. He faces charges of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, firing into an occupied dwelling, felony child abuse and more charges are expected to be filed as the investigation continues, said Little.
