West qualifies four in tennis

OCEAN ISLE BEACH — The Lady Knights of West Bladen High continued to add to the success of their record-setting season on the tennis courts by qualifying four players for the state’s Class 2-A East Regionals.

On a chilly day at Ocean Isle Beach Park, West Bladen saw its No. 1 doubles team of Lexi Storms and Erica Tanner finish in the runner-up spot of the Waccamaw Conference Tournament.

In singles action, the Lady Knights’ No. 2 singles player Hannah Dowless took second place and their No. 4 singles player Nicole Nye took third.

With four, West Bladen qualified the most players for the state tournament out of the Waccamaw Conference.

The East Regionals will be played Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20, at Snow Hill High. Other conferences involved include the Northeast Coastal, East Central and Eastern Plains.

— The results of the Lady Eagles versus Whiteville High on Monday didn’t match the effort, as East Bladen fell to the Lady Wolfpack by the scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 25-19.

The loss drops East Bladen to 5-13 overall and 2-8 in the Waccamaw Conference.

Leading the way for the Lady Eagles in the stat sheet was Lacey Suggs’ eight service points. She also had an ace. Abbey Norris added three kills, a block and an ace. Miller Heustess contributed three aces and Melissa Macon had two aces.

Natalie Hardin added a block and a kill for East Bladen.

— In Leland on Tuesday, West Bladen High swept North Brunswick High in straight sets to clinch the top Class 2-A spot in the Waccamaw Conference by the scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-8.

The win improves the Lady Knights to 12-4 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

Kaitlyn Sykes led West Bladen on the stat sheet with 16 service points, and ace and a block. Mallory Davis followed with 12 service points, seven blocks and four kills. Danielle Dove contributed 10 service points and an ace, while Courtney Thompson added nine service points, five blocks, four kills and an ace.

Haley Cox also had nine service points and an ace, while Abbey Walters had eight service winners.

West Bladen, which won’t play again until Tuesday when they host East Bladen High, already has their first state playoff match set up — they will host the East Central Conference’s No. 5 team in the Castle on Saturday, Oct. 20.

— In Shallotte on Wednesday, West Brunswick High whitewashed the visiting Knights of West Bladen High in a Waccamaw Conference matchup, 9-0.

The loss drops West Bladen to 3-9 overall, 0-7 in the conference.

The Trojans tallied five goals in the first half and were never threatened, adding four more scores in the second half to seal the win.

Lucas McNeill, who was peppered with shots by the home team, recorded 11 saves in the nets for the Knights.

— In Southport on Wednesday, East Bladen High’s Eagles were nipped by host South Brunswick High 2-1 in a Waccamaw Conference match.

The loss drops East Bladen to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
