National Day of Prayer attracts 19
by Erin Smith
Staff writer

ELIZABETHTOWN —The flag pole in front of the Elizabethtown Municipal Building was the site for the National Day of Prayer on Wednesday, which was attended by 19 folks.

“It’s a time for praying,” said organizer Clara Adams. She added that with all of the turmoil and hurt in the world, prayer is needed.

Minister Katie Rhodie-Powell attended for her first time. She is in outreach ministry and is celebrating 23 years as a minister.

“I read about it in the paper and that is why I’m here,” said Iva Potts of the event. When asked her thoughts on the event she said, “We need it.”

This year marked the 62nd year nationally and the 12th year that Bladen County has participated.

The event began to take place in Bladen County 12 years ago when Adams held the National Day of Prayer event under a grove of trees near her home. After that it moved to the flag pole in front of the Elizabethtown Municipal Building.

The scriptural basis for this year’s National Day of Prayer event was Matthew 12:21, which reads: “In His name the nations will put their hope.”

As those gathered began to pray, a electricity filled the air as vehicles rumbled past, prayers were sent up for our leaders, those who are hurting, sick and those who are in need as well as those who are shut-in. Prayers were also expressed for the nation as a whole.

“We don’t just pray for one day. We need to pray day and night,” said Adams.
