ELIZABETHTOWN — A Bladenboro man has been returned to Bladen County from Virginia and slapped with 92 charges against him.
According to Capt. Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Darryl Dewitt McMaster arrived Saturday and will face 46 counts of identity theft and 46 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.
“McMaster would find individuals who wanted to purchase cable and would use names that he fraudulently obtained to have the service turned on,” Hester said. “When the listed individuals received the monthly bills, they would throw it away. It reportedly took Time Warner Cable about three months to figure out that a crime had occurred.”
Hester said the names being used by McMaster were those of military officials or former military personnel. That caused the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Office of the Inspector General’s Criminal Division to assist in the case.
“It remains unclear how McMaster obtained the names,” Hester said. He added that McMaster is wanted in Virginia for similar crimes.
McMaster is currently being held in the Bladen County Jail under a $92,000 secured bond.
