Special Olympics

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Bladen County Chapter of the North Carolina Special Olympics held its annual Spring Games at Elizabethtown Middle School on Friday.

Athletes from eight public schools in Bladen County, as well as from Community Innovations, Monarch Bladen Opportunities Unlimited, Bladen Community College and RHA Healthcare Services participated in a wide variety of events — from sotfball toss, long jump, bocce, T-ball and more.

Some athletes, who were not participating in the Spring Games, were able to participate in an area called Olympic Town where they took part in a number of sports activities.

In the photos: Joshua Johnson, a seventh-grader at Tar Heel Middle School, holds one end of the school’s banner; Helen Rogers of Elizabethtown takes a photo of the opening ceremonies; the torch run was completed by Blake Bryan of the White lake Police, Travis Thornton with the Elizabethtown Police and Richard Allen with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office; Thornton lights the Olympic flame; Leanne Butler takes a swipe at the T-ball event; Myasia Moragne shows off her first-place medal in the softball throw; Ashanti Kelly tosses the ball and then shows off her medal; Octavius Council of Clarkton boots a goal at the soccer event.
