CERRO GORDO –The Knights took a quick 3-1 lead Saturday, then held on for 5-4 non-conference win over West Columbus.
West Bladen got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single by Trent West, but the Vikings knotted the game at 1-1 in the home half.
The Knights plated two runs in the second inning behind a bases-loaded, two-run single from T.J. Guyton for a 3-1 edge.
West Columbus cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second, but the Knights responded with two runs in the third inning behind an RBI double by Logan West and run-scoring single from Hunter Pait for a 5-2 advantage.
The Vikings rallied with a run in the third and another in the fifth, but came up short.
Caleb Sholar earned the win, pitching into the fifth and striking out four. Scott Bowen finished the game to earn the save, striking out three.
At the plate, Trent West was 2-for-3 with an RBI; Guyton had two RBI; Logan West had a double and one RBI; and Pait had an RBI.
The Knights will host Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday in a conference game at 7 p.m.
— In Cerro Gordo on Saturday, the Lady Knights got a 4-for-4 day from shortstop Conner Brisson and a combined three-hitter from Sophia Singletary and Madison Collins in the circle to hand West Columbus a 7-1 non-conference loss.
After a scoreless first inning, West Bladen scored twice in the top of the second behind a passed ball and a fielder’s choice RBI from Logan Autry.
The Lady Knights broke the game open in the third inning when Singletary laced a two-run single, Autry drove home a run with another fielder’s choice and two passed balls brought two more runs in for a 7-0 advantage.
The Lady Vikings ruined the whitewash with a run in the fourth frame, fueled by two West Bladen errors.
Singletary got the win with five innings of work, striking out four and giving up three hits. Collins finished up, giving up no hits and fanning a pair.
In addition to Brisson’s perfect day at the plate, Kassidy Anderson was 2-for-4 and both Singletary and Autry had two RBI.
The Lady Knights will host Wallace-Rose Hill in a conference game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
