FAYETTEVILLE — East Bladen’s hopes of a spring break baseball title were dashed on Monday when the Eagles’ bats went cold and took an 11-3 loss to Scotland County in the second round of the J. Hoyt Warren/Wayne Edwards Invitational at Douglas Byrd High.
The loss drops East Bladen to 6-3 and into the third-place game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Gray’s Creek.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Ty Watkins slugged a long double and came home moments later on Alex Coates’ RBI groundout, but Scotland responded with three runs in the home half of the third and added four more in the bottom of the fourth frame and another run in the fifth for an 8-1 edge.
East Bladen plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to pull within 8-3 without a hit — instead using a walk, error, two passed balls, three wild pitches and a stolen base — but Scotland got a run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
The Eagles were held to just three hits in the game — Kyle Tatum was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Nikita Owens was 1-for-3 and Ty Watkins was 1-for-3.
