ELIZABETHTOWN — The Lady Eagles will spend the better part of 10 hours on a bus Saturday traveling to and from their second-round match in the state’s Class 2-A soccer playoffs.
East Bladen, 19-2, will face off against First Flight, 17-5-1, in Kill Devil Hills at 5 p.m.
The Lady Nighthawks’ young squad finished first in the Northeastern Coastal Conference with a 10-0 record — led by freshman Ashley Forbes, who has scored 25 goals; sophomore Casey Bouker, who has 20 goals; sophomore Alexandra Rodman with 14 goals and 15 assists; and sophomore Brayleigh Jones with 13 goals and 16 assists.
In the nets, freshman Codie Patterson was First Flights’ mainstay and has given up just 16 goals with 78 saves this season with 10 shutouts.
First Flights has scored 117 goals and given up 19 this season.
But the Nighthawks probably haven’t faced an offensive powerhouse like the Lady Eagles will bring.
Senior Lacey Suggs leads East Bladen with 40 goals and 26 assists playing in just 17 of the team’s 21 matches because of an extended basketball season. But she is hardly the only threat. Junior Justyna Gargala and sophomore Hannah Devane each have 12 goals this season, while Devan has 22 assists and Gargala has 18. Senior Abby Ward has chipped in with nine goals and 13 assists.
As a team, East Bladen has scored 100 goals this season and given up 23.
In the nets for the Lady Eagles, senior Kathryn Cole has given up 23 goals and made 60 saves with 11 shutouts.
