ROWLAND — James Moore rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Weston Pidgeon tossed a pair of touchdown passes to lead West Bladen past South Robeson on Friday, 35-0, in the season opener.
“We had to shake off a sluggish start,” said Knights coach Todd Pait. “But we eventually got rolling.”
West Bladen got on the board in the first quarter when Pidgeon hit Dayvon Swindell with a 23-yard scoring pass. Scott Bowen booted the PAT to give the Knights a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, West Bladen took advantage of a Mustangs turnover and doubled the lead. The final play of the short drive was a 6-yard touchdown run by Pidgeon and Bowen kicked the extra point for a 14-0 Knights lead tat held up until halftime.
West Bladen got another touchdown pass from Pidgeon in the third quarter, this one a 10-yard scoring strike to T.J. Kemp, and Bowen split the uprights on the point after for a 21-0 Knights advantage.
Early in the fourth frame, Moore got most of his yards for the night when he broke loose for an 80-yard gallop to the end zone. Bowen’s kick was good and West Bladen’s lead grew to 28-0.
The Knights put the cherry on top of a lopsided, whitewash win later in the fourth quarter when Michael Hepburn toted the ball 18 yards on two carries, the last one a 4-yard run to pay dirt. Bowen knocked home the extra point to give the Knights the final 35-0 margin.
“The defense played phenomenal and the offense really found its groove in the second half,”said West Bladen coach Todd Pait. “Penalties plagued us all night and we will have to clean that up …”
B.J. Drake finished the night with 72 yards on 10 carries and, through the air, Pidgeon was 5-of-13 for two touchdowns and 65 yards to four receivers.
The Knights will host West Columbus in a non-conference game on Friday.
