DUBLIN –The Lady Knights took advantage of hosting the Four County Conference tennis tournament for the first time on Wednesday, capturing a singles and doubles championship and qualifying four players for the state’s Class 2-A Regionals.

Those Regionals, which will be held in Goldsboro on Friday, will actually see the entire West Bladen team in action since the Lady Knights have gone undefeated and won the conference title.

On Wednesday, West Bladen’s unblemished No. 1 doubles team of Alanna Ludlum and Amber Long cruised through the conference tournament, repeating as champions by giving up just two games along the way.

After a first-round bye, the Lady Knights’ duo defeated a Clinton foe 6-0 and 6-1, then knocked off a second Clinton opponent to take the title, 6-1 and 6-0.

In singles action, West Bladen’s Conner Brisson, the Lady Knights’ No. 4 singles player, stormed to the championship by opening with a 6-2, 6-3 win over a Clinton foe; defeated Cassie Hill of East Bladen by a 6-1, 6-4 verdict; then beat teammate Savannah Lee for the title, 8-5.

West Bladen’s doubles team of Helen Lopez and Alyssa Bell defeated Trinity Carroll and Maddie West of east Bladen in the first round, 6-0 and 6-4, but fell to a Clinton team in the semifinals, 6-0 and 6-1.

The Lady Eagles of East Bladen saw two players — Hill and Justyna Gargala — advance to the tournament’s semifinals in singles before getting knocked off.
