ELIZABETHTOWN — A Leland man was arrested Tuesday and charged with kidnapping and several counts of assault of a Lake Waccamaw woman and her unborn child.

According to Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker, the kidnapping took place on Feb. 14.

Arrested was Cary Efton Graham, 34, who was charged with first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by strangulation, battery of an unborn child, assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, and communicating threats.

Graham is currently in the Bladen County Jail with no bond.

McVicker said the victim was identified as Brittany Hunt, 26.

“Graham and Hunt had a domestic relationship,” said McVicker. “Hunt went to Jacobs Loop Road in Bladen County and kidnapped her at gunpoint. He took her to another location in Bladen County where he physically assaulted her, strangling her and repeatedly kicking her with heavy boots.”

McVicker said Hunt then drove her to Brunswick County where she was able to get away from him and contact law enforcement and get medical help.

“We were assisted in this case by both Columbus County and Brunswick County sheriff’s offices,” said McVicker. “Their help was invaluable in locating evidence, locating the suspect and getting him behind bars. This type of cooperation is typical of our offices, which work with each other all the time.”
