Special to the Journal

The 4-H Friends of Youth is currently in need of volunteers. Friends of Youth is a Governor's One-on-One Volunteer Program in partnership with North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

The purpose of the Friends of Youth Program is to place at-risk youth between the ages of seven and 17 with caring adults who would share experiences, some time, and become a special friend.

Each adult volunteer makes a commitment to be a positive role model and spend at least four hours a week for one year with that young person.

Through weekly interaction with the adult volunteer, the youth are encouraged to improve their grades and participate in other community projects. the youth are also introduced to new hobbies and other activities that will help build their self-esteem.

The adult volunteer is also there to help the young person when faced with difficult decisions and peer pressures.

For more information on how you can make a difference in the life of a young person, call Stephanie Hollis at 862-4591.
