E'town holds on by a cleat

The Elizabethtown Dixie Youth Baseball AAA all-star team stayed alive in the State Tournament being played in Leland with a 5-3 win over Burgaw Tuesday night.

The win, coupled with Hope Mills' loss to Dallas left the three remaining teams with one loss each.

Elizabethtown took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning and then held off a determined Burgaw squad to get the win.

Phil Wilson led the second inning off with a single, and following an out Josh Tatum singled.

Cameron Wooten followed with a single and Shane Stewart tripled before Burgaw recorded the second out.

Zac Campbell was hit by a pitch and Ryan Collins walked as Elizabethtown scored the four runs.

Burgaw took advantage of three hits and a walk to score two runs in the bottom of the second, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

Elizabethtown's final run came in the top of the fourth as Campbell came up with a two-out single and scored on a double by Collins.

Burgaw used two singles to score its final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Hammonds pitched the first five innings for Elizabethtown and Wilson pitched the sixth.

Hammonds gave up six hits, walked two and struck out one. Wilson didn't allow a hit or walk.

Wilson led Elizabethtown at the plate with two hits, and Campbell, Collins, Josh Tatum, Lane Greene and Stewart had one hit each.
