White Lake commissioners Tuesday voted to replace a worn-out pump at the Louise Street well.

Public Works Director Tim Frush said the pump had been malfunctioning for some time. Town workers discovered extensive wear and tear on the 30-plus year old pump recently.

"Some of the bearings were actually burned onto the shaft," Frush said.

Commissioners opted to pay a Fayetteville firm $7,500 for a new pump for the well.

In other business, Larry Barnhart and David Clark made an annual presentation of dozens of police checks to the town.

The notes are placed in doors throughout he town when police officers check businesses and residences during routine patrol.

Barnhart presented the board with a large coffee can stuffed with the notes, which he called "proof of the quality of service we have here in White Lake."

Clearwater employees gather the checks every morning, and Barnhart presents them to the town around the first of each year.

"We can't say enough about the police department," Barnhart said. "They are always here when we need them, and we appreciate it. The times on these stubs prove we have police protection when we need it."

Barnhart praised all the town departments.

"The times we have needed fire or rescue service," he said, "they were there within minutes."

He also thanked Frush for the town's cooperation with Camp Clearwater. The campground paid over $93,000 in water and sewer bills to the town last year from hookups at the camp.

"I hear of the problems other campgrounds have with water and sewer," Barnhart said. He is president of the N.C. Campground Association. "Those problems are foreign to us. The cooperation and help we get from the town of White Lake is outstanding."
