A single-car wreck Thursday took the life of a Hope Mills woman just across the Bladen-Cumberland County line.

Maribel Torres, 19, was driving west on N.C. 53 at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her 2001 Pontiac and struck at least one tree, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Torres was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report, and was thrown from the vehicle.

The crash occurred near the Jerome community on N.C. 53.

Firefighters and rescue crews from White Oak, Tar Heel, and Gray's Creek responded to the crash. The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
