Sgt. Bruce Smith of the White Lake Police Department was sworn in Monday as the town's new police chief.

Smith was named to the post Tuesday night after a special continued session of the White Lake Town Council, according to assistant town clerk Brenda Clark.

The meeting was continued from the council's regular September meeting to hold a public hearing on refinancing the construction of the town's municipal complex.

Smith replaces long-time chief Donald Kinlaw, who retired Aug. 28 after 33 years in law enforcement, most of it at the lake. At one point, Smith and Kinlaw were the only town officers patrolling the lake.

Smith, 26, is a graduate of East Bladen High School and the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Bladen Community College. He has been with the White Lake department for nearly six years.

Smith was chosen over a field of candidates from all over the state.

He and his wife Kristy have a daughter, Kaley, who is four.
