The Bladen County Commissioners, at their Monday meeting, tabled a request from the White Lake Fire Department to appropriate $20,000 from the fire district contingency fund.

When Emergency Services Director Mitchell Byrd brought the issue to the attention of the commissioners, he stated that the department had requested the funds to purchase a 3,300-gallon water tanker. He stated that the request from the department calls for the purchase of a used truck with tank for $40,500.

He pointed out that the department has requested authority to purchase during the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30.

In the request from the White Lake Fire Department dated May 28, Fire Chief Dale Brennan stated that the Fire District Board would meet on June 3 and would endorse the request at that time.

Commissioner Larry Smith stated that he believed the commissioners had agreed at an earlier meeting that they would not take action on such requests unless documentation of approval by the fire district commissioners was not included with the request.

Byrd agreed that the commissioners had made such an agreement and that he had not yet received the endorsement from the White Lake Fire District Commissioners.

With that the County Commissioners voted to table the request pending receipt of the required endorsement.
