Even though the holiday is nearly two months away, Bladenboro Police officers have Christmas on their minds.
The department began collecting donations for the annual Christmas for Kids program today (Tuesday). Chief Ronnie Rising said the need, as always, is great.
"We've already had people asking if we could help them," Rising said.
The Christmas for Kids program, now in its fourth year in Bladenboro, takes underprivileged children Christmas shopping. Each child has an adult chaperone and gets a set amount to spend on themselves, although many use the money for their families, Rising said.
The children receive the presents shortly before Christmas. In the past, they have been treated to a classic car ride through downtown Bladenboro and demonstrations by the Bladenboro Fire Department as well.
"It's the only Christmas some of these children have," Rising said.
The money comes from donations in the community. Rising said he hopes to have local merchants sponsor the shopping trips this year.
"We'd like to keep the business closer to home, and in the county," Rising said.
All donations are welcome, Rising said. A fundraising goal has not yet been set.
"Some people can only help with a few dollars, and some can help a lot more," Rising said. "It's all for a good cause."
Children are nominated for the program by staff at area schools.

The program raised over $8,000 last year and helped 33 children buy Christmas presents. Some proceeds were also used to buy food baskets for needy residents in the area.
