A Leland man was jailed for manslaughter and other charges after a car crash Saturday that killed one and injured the driver and another man.

James Sanford Graham, 28, of Leland, was a passenger in a car that crashed near the intersection of Allen Priest Road and N.C. 87 about 7:45 p.m. Saturday. He died at the scene.

Johnny Dale Herring Jr., 20, also of Leland, was driving the vehicle.

According to a report by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper S.S. Floyd, Herring was charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, underage drinking, careless and reckless driving, no safety belt, and involuntary manslaughter. Herring was treated and released at Bladen County Hospital. Herring was jailed under $12,500 bond.

Herring was headed east on N.C. 87 when he apparently tried to pass another vehicle, the report said. He then pulled back to the right to avoid another oncoming vehicle and lost control of the car.

The vehicle struck a ditch bank on the right side of the road and overturned.

Stephen Bain, 18, another passenger in the car, was admitted to Bladen County Hospital.

Graham was the seventh person to die on Bladen County highways this year. The last fatality occurred in September, when a Dublin man was killed on Owen Hill Road.

Last year, a total of 13 traffic-related deaths were reported in Bladen County.
