A Friday wreck at a busy intersection near the Sampson County line caused serious damage to two vehicles and sent one man to the hospital.
According to a report by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper J.M. Kinlaw, Johnny Ray Murphy of 200 Murphy Town Rd., Harrells, was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Murphy is 27.
The wreck occurred Friday around 4 p.m. The report states that Murphy was headed west on N.C. 41 when he attempted to make a left turn, pulling into the path of an eastbound UPS truck driven by Dexter Obrian Boone, 46, of Leland.
The UPS driver was unable to stop to avoid the collision, and broadsided Murphy's Honda at 55 miles per hour. The Honda came to rest a few feet from the gas pumps at an old store at the intersection. The building is now used as an office by a construction company.
The UPS truck, a 1985 GMC, came to rest in the intersection. Boone was uninjured.
According to the report, Murphy told investigators he was blinded by the sun and did not see the UPS truck.
Damage to the 1992 Honda, which is owned by Greta Victoria Fritz, was estimated at $2,500. The car was demolished.
The UPS truck also sustained $2,500 damage.
