Bladen County Coroner Hubert Kinlaw said the driver was John Russell Stieffel of Mount Vision, N.Y. He was 44.
Stieffel was burned beyond recognition in the crash. He died when the 1989 Mercury he was driving went through an intersection at Paul Brisson Road and N.C. 41 near Dublin.
According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Stieffel failed to stop for a stop sign on Paul Brisson Road, crossed N.C. 41 and collided with a tree. The crash occurred around 2 a.m.
It is not known if Stieffel had any connections to the Bladen County area. It is not known if alcohol or drugs played a part in the wreck.
