Lady Eagles beaten for first time in league play

The Whiteville Lady Wolfpack remained undefeated with a 62-55 Waccamaw Conference basketball win over the East Bladen Eagles Friday night in a contest played at Whiteville.

It was the Lady Eagles first conference loss of the season.

East Bladen's record fell to 3-1 in league play and 11-3 overall. The Lady Eagles are schedule to host the South Brunswick Lady Cougars tonight.

Whiteville's record improved to 5-0 in league play and 14-0 overall. The Lady Wolfpack is scheduled to host the West Columbus Lady Vikings tonight.

Jatoya Kemp paced East Bladen with 21 points and Dorothy Corbett chipped in with 17, but that did not off set a 25-point performance by Whiteville's Shannon McCallum along with 18 points from Palona Faison. McCallum pulled down 19 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

Whiteville is ranked as the No. 1 2-A girls team in the state. East Bladen is ranked seventh.

The contest was tied 16-16 at the end of the first quarter. Whiteville opened the 10-0 run in the second quarter, including eight straight points by McCallum, to take a 26-16 advantage.

A big second period gave the Lady Wolfpack a 37-27 halftime lead. Whiteville scored 21 points in the quarter.

Later in the period, Faison swished a 3-pointer to give Whiteville a 33-19 lead.

Corbett got a pair of lay-ups in the final 30 seconds of the half to cut the Lady Wolfpack lead to 37-27.

East Bladen came back strong in the third quarter, going on an 11-0 run and cutting the Whiteville lead to 44-40 after three quarters.

Lady Eagles opened the fourth quarter with another charge to tie the score at 49 with 4:42 left to play in the third period.

Whiteville responded with a 10-0 run to take a 59-49 lead, and the Lady Wolfpack held on for the win.
