An Elizabethtown native was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon in Greensboro after allegedly raping a woman and shooting her father six times in Georgia.

Bladen County Sheriff Steve Bunn said local officers were on the lookout for Terrance McDowell after he assaulted the woman, a former girlfriend, and kidnapped their children. The two children, five-year-old Jaquan Wright and four-year-old Faith McDonald, were recovered safely with a relative in Greensboro late Tuesday.

McDowell is 27, and lived in Georgia. He is originally from the Elizabethtown area, and authorities thought he was headed this way.

The suspect allegedly forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's house early Tuesday and assaulted the woman, then repeatedly shot her father, who is 64, in the chest and head. McDowell then fled the scene with the two children. McDowell is Faith's biological father.

Bunn said an Amber Alert warning was issued for Georgia and the Carolinas.

McDowell allegedly said he would not be taken alive. He was arrested by Greensboro police without incident.

Bunn said Bladen County deputies and Elizabethtown Police were watching several locations where authorities suspected McDowell might hide. Deputies, officers and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers were also patrolling area roads looking for the suspect's vehicle.

"We're glad he was taken into custody safely," Bunn said, "and especially that the children were okay."

McDowell has no recent criminal record, but was charged several times with assault, a probation violation and domestic trespass in the late 1990's.

The children were returned to their mother unharmed Tuesday night. Their grandfather was in critical condition Wednesday.
