The clinics held on April 13 and April 30 to help pet owners permanently identify their pets were called a rousing success by the members of the County Animal Response Team (CART), which sponsored the events.

Microchips were implanted in a total of 69 animals during the two days-67 dogs, one cat and a horse, according the Bladen County Livestock Agent Becky Spearman, coordinator of the clinics.

Dr. Bryant Morton and Cindy Harrelson of Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital volunteered their time to provide the service.

The clinics provided a low-cost way for pet owners to identify their pets in the event they become lost or are stolen.

Pet owners were able to have microchips implanted in their animals for about half of what if would normally cost-$20, of which $9 comes back to CART to help educate pet and livestock owners.

Because of the success of the first clinics, CART members are discussing the possibility of having more clinics this fall or next spring.

Spearman said the team is especially grateful to Dr. Morton and his staff; the Greene family, who allowed the clinics to be held on the grounds of The Barn Restaurant; The Barking Lot for the use of a kennel and stand, Bladen Office Supply and Bay Tree Lakes Kennels for the Animal Response Team banner.

CART needs volunteers to help carry on the work of the program. For information, or to volunteer, call Becky Spearman at 862-4591.
