Bladen Community College officials have appointed Gwen Jacobs to become the new Basic Skills Director.

Jacobs, who was hired earlier this year as the Basic Skills Coordinator, assumed her new position effective June 1.

"We want to declare war on illiteracy," said BCC President Dr. Darrell Page. "Ms. Jacobs possesses the level of energy and enthusiasm that is needed to renew the effort to assist people in receiving their high school diploma, GED, or basic skills for survival."

Page added, "Jacobs will lead the way in this area and provide new programs and basic skills sites throughout the county."

Jacobs says she is happy about her appointment to become the new director of the program.

"The position of Basic Skills Director comes with great challenge and responsibility. It required a team effort from BCC Administration, Basic Skills staff, and additional community agencies," said Jacobs.

According to the 2000 census data, approximately 30 percent of Bladen County residents over the age of 25 have not completed their high school education.

"It is my vision to help residents earn their Adult High School Diploma or GED and refer them to additional classes. I want the residents of Bladen County to realize the wealth of knowledge and opportunities available to them.

Jacobs earned her Master of Education and Master of Reading degrees from Fayetteville State University. Jacobs plans to pursue her doctorate in educational leadership in the fall.

Basic skill classes are taught at various locations and times throughout the county.

For information, call Jacobs at 879-5648.
