Elizabethtown beats Hoke in first round

The Elizabethtown Dixie Youth Baseball AAA All-Stars defeated Hoke County 12-7 in the opening round of the District 9 Tournament played at Raeford Friday night.

Hoke County took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning with the help of two hits, a walk, a hit batter and an Elizabethtown error.

Elizabethtown tied the contest in the bottom of the frame. Cam West reached on an error and Rayvon Abbeye singled. A double by Reakwon Brunson scored West and Abbeye.

Zack Coger walked and scored on a single by Cyhem Chancey. Following an out, Chancey scored as Jerimah McKoy reached on a fielder’s choice.

Seven runs in the bottom of the third inning gave Elizabethtown an 11-4 lead. With two out, Nick Hood and West both walked. Abbeye followed with a single scoring Hood and West, and Brunson connected with a home run clearing the bases.

Coger and Chancey walked and both scored as Hastin McGill reached on an error. McGill scored on a single by Matthew Massengil.

Elizabethtown added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Coger reached on an error and scored on a double by Chancey.

Hoke used a hit batter and two ground-outs to score a run in the top of the fifth. Two Elizabethtown errors and back-to-back singles gave Hoke County two more runs in the top of the sixth.

C. J. McDowell, McGill and Massengil pitched two innings each for Elizabethtown. The two combined to give up four hits and four walks.

Brunson batted 2-for-3 with a double and home run. Abbeye batted 2-for 3 and Chancey 2-for-2. McGill and Massengil had one hit each.

In other first round games Friday, Fairmont beat West Robeson National, West Robeson American defeated Lumberton American and Red Springs downed Scotland.

In second round games Saturday, Lumberton National beat Fairmont and West Robeson American defeated Red Springs. West Robeson National eliminated Hoke County and Lumberton American eliminated Scotland County.
