ELIZABETHTOWN — Beth Wood, the Democratic candidate for the office of the state auditor, visited Bladen County last week to meet some of our residents, business owners and officials.
Though she has never run for office before, Wood said she hit the road during the primaries, speaking at least five out of seven nights at various locations throughout the state. She ended up winning the primary by 64.3 percent, she said.
“I could campaign all day, everyday,” Wood said with a smile. “I’m meeting the neatest people.”
Wood said most residents are not aware of the duties of the state auditor’s office.
“We have nothing to do with tax returns,” she said. “We audit tax dollars being used at state level, so the citizens of North Carolina are our constituency.”
The office is responsible for auditing universities, community colleges, clerks of court and some non-profits, Wood said.
She will face Republican incumbent Les Merritt in the November general elections. For more information, visit
