ELIZABETHTOWN — Tuesday is a day set aside to honor our veterans for their sacrifices in order to maintain our freedom. Many veterans will be honored with parades, memorial services and other events to thank them.
In Bladen, there are two services planned to celebrate local veterans and their service to their country.
On Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. a ceremony will take place at the National Guard Armory in Elizabethtown.
“The program will include a flyover air show sponsored by the Hester, Campbell and Clark families,” said organizer Ann Garrett.
The program will also include the announcing of the winners of an essay contest.
“We had over 200 students to enter essays answering the question, ‘What does a veteran mean to you?’,” said Garrett.
Drill teams from East Bladen and West Bladen high schools’ JROTC squads will perform. Ret. Lt. Col. Ophelia Munn-Goins will be the guest speaker for the ceremony.
“There will also be a free meal following the ceremony,” said Garrett.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Bladen Community College will have a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. at the flagpole. In the event of rain, the program will be held in the auditorium.
History instructor and noted historian on World War II, Cliff Tyndall, will be the featured speaker.
Both events are open to the public.
