RIEGELWOOD — Traffic came to a standstill on Monday afternoon on N.C. 11 after a tractor-trailer truck hauling a load of wood chips had the trailer to split open, blocking both lanes of traffic. The incident occurred about 1 p.m. near the bridge.
According to published reports, the truck was owned by Bowen Trucking of Riegelwood.
With the exception of Elwell Ferry and U.S. 701 in Elizabethtown, there are no other access points for traffic to cross the Cape Fear River.
According to reports, crews were on the scene until about 7 p.m. clearing chips from the roadway. The road re-opened to traffic late Monday.
The three bridges that span the Cape Fear River and its overflow area on N.C. 11 are scheduled to be replaced in the 2009-2015 state TIP plan. No dates are listed for when work will begin on the bridge replacements.
