ELIZABETHTOWN — After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury came back with a guilty verdict on David Earl Parnell on Monday afternoon. Parnell was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the Feb. 15, 2008, shooting death of Michael Eugene Lanier.
On Tuesday morning, Parnell was sentenced to not less than 92 months with time served. After the 12 months he has already served since the shooting, he is left facing at least 80 months at the N.C. Department of Corrections.
Jury selection for the trial began on Monday, Feb. 3, with the trial getting under way the following afternoon.
Parnell could have been found guilty of first-degree murder; guilty of second-degree murder; guilty of voluntary manslaughter; or not guilty.
Lanier's death occurred at Parnell's home at 493 Oak Tree Trail, Elizabethtown. He was found dead at the scene by authorities from a single gunshot wound to the back.
