The Clarkton Housing Authority will meet Tuesday, June 18, 6 p.m. at the Clarkton community building on site in Clarkton.

The Bladen County Educational Foundation will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Bladen County Board of Education in the public meeting room. This will be our last meeting until the new school year resumes. We will be discussing the possibilities of some upcoming events and fund raisers. Everyone is encouraged to attend and bring a guest.

June 24

W. Curt Vincent will be at the Bladenboro Public Library on Monday, June 24, and the Clarkton Public Library on Tuesday, June 25, at 3 p.m. to read his book, ‘The Luckiest Leaf’ to the children to kick off the libraries’ Summer Reading Program.

June 25

— The Elizabethtown ABC Board fiscal year 2013-2014 proposed budget has been submitted to the Board and is available for public inspection in the manager’s office. This budget may be inspected during regular business hours. A public hearing for the proposed budget is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m. in the manager’s office of the ABC store located at 2817 W. Broad St., Elizabethtown. The public is invited to attend.

W. Curt Vincent will have a book launch party at the Bladen County Library on Wednesday, June 26, at 3 p.m. Children will be read ‘The Luckiest Leaf’ by the author, plant some trees and enjoy refreshments.

June 27

— The monthly community education series will continue on Thursday, June 27, from 10 a.m. until noon. The topic will be “AIDS: The stuff you didn’t know” with Steve Marson of UNC-Pembroke. The program will take place at the Bladen County cooperative Extension office located at 450 Smith Circle, Elizabethtown. To register, call Nicole Wilson at 800-913-6109.

July 4

—A trip to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival Get Away 2013 is scheduled to depart July 4, 2013 at 2:30 a.m. from 303 S. Morehead Street, Elizabethtown, and will return Monday, July 8, in the early afternoon/evening. Cost is $310 per person for four nights stay. July 12

— The annual “Christmas in July” Bazaar and Salad Lunch will be held July 12, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Powell-Melvin Agricultural Center. Lunch includes chicken, pasta, vegetable and fruit salads, bread sticks and a beverage for $5. Tickets can be purchased from any Extension & Community Association (“ECA”) member or at the Extension Office located at 450 Smith Circle Drive in Elizabethtown. Also available from ECA members are raffle tickets for the giveaway of themed baskets of goodies. Vendors, many of them local, will be selling a unique variety of items at the bazaar.

Anyone interested in reserving a vendor table should call 862-4591 for information and a reservation form.

Oct. 4

— Kidz-N-Motion Day Care, Fitness and Dance Center will travel to Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Fla. Oct. 4 through Oct. 8. Cost is four payments of $188 or $47 per person per room. First payment is due May 10, second installment June 10, third installment July 10, and fourth installment Aug. 9. — Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8062, meets on the third Saturday of each month at 3 p.m. at the VFW building located at 109 Hill Street, Elizabethtown. All veterans who served in a foreign war are welcomed for membership.

— The Bladen County Military Museum meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Bladenboro Historical Society Building located at 818 S. Main Street, Bladenboro. All veterans are welcomed for membership.

— Bladen County Farm Bureau is now accepting applications for their scholarships. Our Cecil McClure Memorial Scholarship provides $500.00 per year and the R. Flake Shaw Scholarship provides $3,750.00 per year. Applicants may apply through Bladen County Farm Bureau, by contacting Tammy Guyton at 910-645-2042. Eligibility requirements for both scholarships will be based on (1) financial need; (2) satisfactory scholastic record; (3) leadership potential; and (4) good character. Applicants must enroll in college in agriculture or in an agriculturally related field. Community colleges do qualify for the R. Flake Shaw Scholarship. Applications must be completed and returned by March 15 to the Bladen County Farm Bureau Office.

— The Board of Education is proud to announce that artwork created by students from Bladen Lakes Primary School and East Arcadia School is on display during the month of February at the district office. Parents are invited to stop by anytime between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to view these wonderful pieces of student work.

— The first Saturday of each month there is a craft fair at the Cape Fear Farmers Market. For more information and to receive a copy of rules and an application call Sarah Baysden at 862-2066.

— Every Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Harmony Hall Plantation in White Oak, will be various activities and events on the grounds, as well as tours of the 1760s plantation home of Col. James Richardson and the outbuildings. All activities, tours and demonstrations are free — a donation is always welcome. For information, call Bobby Lewis at 910-874-4011.

— Woodmen of the World Lodge No. 262 meet on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

— Low-income families who want to get their pets spayed or neutered at A Shelter Friend’s monthly low-income clinic can call 645-2297 for information and sign-up. Volunteers who wish to help with this worthwhile program are also encouraged to call.

— The Bladen County Health Department WIC office is now open during lunch hours (noon to 1 p.m.). Regular WIC department hours are as follows: Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. for ALL SERVICES; Friday 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. for certification and recertification; Pickups are available daily from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information contact 910-872-6218 or 872-6219.

— The Bladen County Youth Focus Project will meet every second Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Paul R. Brown Building on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Elizabethtown. All interested persons are welcome to attend.

— Nancy Johnson will have her artwork displayed at the Bladenboro Visual Arts Council Art Gallery during the month of May and June. She is a teacher in Robeson County. The Bladenboro Visual Arts Council Art Gallery is located in the Bladenboro Historical Building and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

—The Bladen County Amateur Radio Society meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Bladen County Courthouse in Elizabethtown Room G7 at 7 p.m. The public with or without an amateur radio license are welcome to attend.

—The Cape Fear Farmer’s Market is now offering its tailgate market from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

— The Elizabethtown-White Lake Chamber of Commerce meets every second Tuesday at the Front Porch Restaurant at noon.

— The Garland Lodge 1511 of the Woodmen of the World Insurance Society meets the first Friday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Ammon community building. Members and guests are welcome.

— A new military monument has been constructed by the Bladen County Military Museum on a brick patio at 818 S. Main St., Bladenboro. Brick’s may still be purchased and are $100 each. The bricks honor all branches of service beginning with the Revolutionary War. For more information, call 863-4707.

— Bladen County Habitat for Humanity meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church.
