Cox, Sykes lead Lady Knights to ‘W’

DUBLIN — West Bladen High’s Lady Knights used a third-quarter push en route to a 55-43 Waccamaw Conference win over South Brunswick High on Tuesday.

The win improved the Lady Knights to 5-2 in the conference and 14-4 overall.

Haley Cox’s three-pointer highlighted the first quarter for West Bladen, as the Lady Knights opened a 14-11 margin going into the second stanza.

Kaitlyn Sykes erupted for eight points in the second quarter for West Bladen and helped the Lady Knights extend their lead to 29-22 going into halftime.

The Lady Cougars found no adjustments during intermission, and the West Bladen momentum continued unchecked into the third quarter. The Lady Knights outscored South Brunswick by a 16-9 margin behind another three-pointer by Cox, stretching the lead out to 45-31.

Through the final 8 minutes of play, he Lady Cougars narrowly won the quarter by a 12-10 margin, but could not threaten the West Bladen lead.

Cox led the Lady Knights with 13 points, while Sykes added 10 points. Abbey Walters contributed eight points, eight rebounds and had four steals for West Bladen. Courtney Thompson led the team with 10 boards and Taylor Stephens added four steals.
