PREP ROUNDUP: Errors fuel Lady Eagles’ diamond loss

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Eagles of East Bladen High battled South Brunswick to a 2-2 knot through five innings, but a big sixth inning by the Cougars spelled doom in a Waccamaw Conference matchup, 7-2.

The loss drops East Bladen to 0-2 in the conference and 2-4 overall.

The Eagles put a run on the board in the bottom of the first frame when Hastin McGill led off with a single and stole two bases before a passed ball allowed him to scamper home for a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, East Bladen manufactured another run when Alex Coates and Matt Massengill singled ahead of Colby Hester’s RBI single.

South Brunswick, which had tied the game at 2-2 earlier in the contest, scored five times in the sixth inning to break open the game.

— In Elizabethtown on Tuesday, miscues assisted South Brunswick to a 12-9 Waccamaw Conference win over East Bladen.

The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 0-2 in the conference and 3-4 overall.

East Bladen opened the game with a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI singles by Brianna Graham and Miller Heustess, as well as a passed ball.

The Lady Cougars scored a run in the second, then added five more on a slew of East Bladen errors to take a 6-3 lead in the third. The Lady Eagles cut the deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Lexie Dawson and an RBI bunt by Graham.

South Brunswick scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to balloon the lead to 12-5. But East Bladen rallied in the seventh, scoring four runs on an RBI single by Dawson, an error and a two-run fielder’s choice by Jasmine Owens.

— In Dublin on Tuesday, the Lady Knights survived a nip-and-tuck contest for a 3-2 Waccamaw Conference win over West Brunswick.

The win improved West Bladen to 3-0 in the conference and 8-0 on the season.

The Lady Knights went out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Danielle Dove led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on an Abbey Walters RBI single. Walters later scored on a wild pitch after a Robin Coleman single.

The Lady Trojans knotted the game in the third and, after two scoreless innings, West Bladen mounted the winning rally in the sixth when Walters singled and advanced on an error. Coleman reached on a bunt single and, after a walk loaded the bases, Erica Tanner smoked a line drive to right field that was caught, but allowed Walters to tag and score.

— In Dublin on Tuesday, visiting West Brunswick put eight runs on the board in the top of the first and never looked back, taking a 20-6 Waccamaw Conference win over West Bladen.

The loss drops the Knights to 0-3 in the conference and 3-5 overall.

The Trojans held a 9-0 lead in the second before West Bladen plated it first runs. The Knights filled the bags before a fielder’s choice scored a run and an error brought home a second to cut the deficit to 9-2.

But West Brunswick put the game out of reach with six runs in the third to extend the lead to 15-2.

The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the inning behind Matthew Wells’ RBI single, a John Waldrop RBI single and two-run single by Travis Bowen.

The Trojans added five more runs over the next two innings before the game was called after the fifth inning.

— Visiting South Brunswick scored two early goals and answered every East Bladen rally the rest of the way to take a 7-3 Waccamaw Conference win on the pitch Monday.

The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 1-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall.

The Lady Cougars were rewarded early in the match on two long-range shots on goal that barely escaped the hands on East Bladen netminder Abby Ward and snuck under the crossbar for 2-0 lead.

Moments later, Natalie Hardin was awarded a free kick, and she boomed a shot to the back of the net to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

But South Columbus responded as the half was coming to a close and took a 3-1 margin into intermission.

Early in the second half, Hardin was lining up a penalty kick and found the back of the net with a scorcher that pulled East Bladen to within 3-2.

The Lady Cougars, however, scored a few minutes later to regain their two-goal edge — then added another goal soon after to up the margin to 5-2.

Hardin was awarded another penalty kick after Lacey Suggs was pushed on a header inside the box, and Hardin’s shot again found the back of the net to put East Bladen within 5-3.

But South Brunswick held on and managed to add a pair of goals late in the game on penalty kicks.

— In Shallotte on Wednesday, East Bladen gave up three first-half goals and fell to West Brunswick in a Waccamaw Conference tilt, 4-2.

Natalie Hardin and Lacey Suggs each scored a goal and assisted on the other’s for the Lady Eagles’ two goals, and East Bladen opened the game quickly with a goal in the first 15 seconds.

But the Lady Trojans answered with three goals before halftime.

The two teams traded goals in the second half.

Golf

— In Wilmington on Monday, West Brunswick carded a 335 team score to win the weekly Waccamaw Conference match at the 6,478-yard Magnolia Greens Golf Course.

West Bladen came in with a 346 team score, good for third place; East Bladen took seventh with a 465.

The Knights’ Kayla Thompson fired an 83 for the day and took the No. 4 spot among the match’s individuals, just three strokes off the medalist pace. Teammate Cameron Winebarger was one stroke back at 84 and Brett Jackson turned in an 88 for West Bladen.

The Eagles were led by Campbell White’s 89.
