KELLY — The annual Kelly Spring Festival is set to kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. Saturday and other festivities will be taking place at the Kelly Ball Park located on N.C. 53.

The parade will form on Frenches Creek Church Road and follow N.C. 53 and end at the Kelly Volunteer Fire Department. The parade entrants need “to try to be lined up by 10:30 a.m.” said Kathryn Thornton, one of the festival’s organizers.

The grand marshals for this year’s parade will be the original members of the Kelly Volunteer Fire Department. The department is celebrating its 40th year, according Thornton.

“I think there are 12 of the original members that will be serving as the marshals,” said Thornton.

The fire department was established about the year 1969 and members will be on-hand at the ball field selling barbecue plates.

“Forty years is a big accomplishment for such a small community,” said Thornton.

Other activities will include bounce houses for the children as well as a giant rubber slide and live entertainment. There will be signing and dancing and beauty queens, according to Thornton.

“There will also be crafts vendors and several Relay for Life groups will have booths,” she added.

Area churches will also be present with food items.

“Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the day,” said Thornton.
