ELIZABETHTOWN — Mac Campbell has stepped down from his position as the Division 6 representative on the N.C. Transportation Board, two years before his term was to expire.

Campbell, the owner of Campbell Oil & Gas Co. and Minuteman Food Marts in Elizabethtown, said the decision was based on devoting more time to work and family.

Appointed by Gov. Mike Easley, Campbell said his decision had nothing to do with the ongoing federal investigation of the former governor. Campbell and his sons, Brian and McQueen, have been named in violations of state ethics laws in their participation in Easley’s campaigns for office.

“I really am not at liberty to say,” Campbell has said in response to whether the Campbells have been contacted in the investigation.
