ELIZABETHTOWN — On June 14, members of American Legion Post 404 performed the annual ceremony of disposing of unserviceable American flags with a flag-burning.

During the ceremony, 87 worn flags were destroyed and replaced. Members of the Elizabethtown Fire Department assisted American Legion members in the ceremony.

A flag-burning ceremony is a careful and highly respected honor of a U.S. flag that is worn out after worthy service. The flags are then replaced with new flags.

The seventh annual flag-burning ceremony has been scheduled for June 14, 2011 (Flag Day), and the public is invited to attend and witness the ceremony.

An old mailbox is up in front of the Elizabethtown Municipal Building on West Broad Street, where residents can place old and worn flags to be destroyed during the upcoming 2011 ceremony.
