DUBLIN —West Bladen High’s volleyballers capped their regular season with a 3-1 Waccamaw Conference win over East Bladen High on Tuesday by the scores of 25-11, 23-25, 25-11 and 25-17.

The win improved the lady Knights to 13-4 overall and 8-4 in the conference. East Bladen is 6-14, 3-9.

“We kind of let up a little in the second game, but East Bladen played well, too,” said West Bladen coach Gaye Davis. “Overall, I was happy with how we played.”

Kaitlyn Sykes led the Lady Knights with 25 service points, while teammate Abbey Walters had 23 service points and five kills. Courtney Thompson added 15 service points, six kills and three blocks. Danielle Dove had 15 service points, while Mallory Davis had three kills and three blocks.

West Bladen will open the state’s Class 2-A playoffs at 1 p.m. on Saturday at home by hosting Croatan High, the No. 5 seed from the East Central Conference. The Lady Knights are the No. 1 seed out of the Waccamaw Conference.

— West Bladen High couldn’t defend its home pitch on Monday, falling to the Wolfpack of Whiteville 9-0 in a Waccamaw Conference soccer match.

The loss drops the Knights to 3-11 overall and 0-9 in the conference. Whiteville improves to 10-7-1, 6-2-1.

The Wolfpack needed just a hair more than 15 minutes to all but put the match out of reach, scoring five goals in the first 15:07 — the middle three coming from in close.

If there was any doubt, it was erased within a 6-minute period of the second half when Whiteville found the back of the nets for three goals. The Wolfpack tacked on another goal mid-way through the second half to seal the win.

After opening the season with three straight wins, West Bladen has dropped its next 11 matches and has been outscored in its last three by a 21-0 margin.

— West Bladen’s scoreless streak was extended to four straight games in Leland on Wednesday when the Knights fell to North Brunswick, 8-0.

The loss drops West Bladen to 3-12 overall, 0-10 in the conference.

The Scorpions took a 2-0 lead into halftime, then salted the match away with six second-half goals.
