Town gives the OK

to add restaurant

RED SPRINGS — The town Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a rezoning request that allows a local business to expand serve food and add parking.

At their regular monthly meeting, the commissioners approved rezoning El Paso Grocery, located at N.C. 71 and Shannon Road, from residential to general business, which the owner needs to add a restaurant and more parking spaces.

Man charged with

hitting child with brick

LUMBERTON — A Red Springs man faces criminal charges for allegedly hitting an 11-year-old girl in the head with a brick.

Ricky Ray Lambert, 47, of Ingle Drive in Red Springs, was charged Thursday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to information from Capt. Brian Duckworth of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. Lambert was taken to Robeson County Detention Center and placed under a $150,000 bond.

The information by the Sheriff’s Office did not identify the 11-year-old girl.

City is the least

walkable in nation

Fayetteville is the least walkable city with at least 200,000 residents in America.

Two Stantec firm consultants presented that fact and a few others regarding walkability in Fayetteville to the City Council at a work session Tuesday night.

Fayetteville is ranked last according to a 2017 study by WalkScore, a transportation and walkability improvement services company. The ranking is based on how easily residents can walk to and from their home, work, school, businesses, restaurants and entertainment.

Deputy fired after

wife is injured

WHITEVILLE — A Columbus County sheriff’s deputy was dismissed Tuesday amid allegations of domestic violence.

James F. Norris, 31, was fired at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Michelle Tatum. His termination letter did not cite the reason for the dismissal. Deputies serve at the discretion of the sheriff.

The termination came after detectives interviewed Norris’ wife, Linda, regarding injuries she said she sustained after a Sept. 1 car crash on Dothan Road. Mrs. Norris, 41, said she was injured getting into another vehicle after the wreck, Tatum said.
