April 6

— A beginning genealogy group will meet at 1 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Bladen County Senior Center, 608 McLeod St. in Elizabethtown. Bring a notebook and a pencil and we’ll embark on a trip through time. For more information, call Carol Mitchell at 910-872-6331.

— The Compassionate Friends Border Belt Chapter, serving the parents of both Columbus and Bladen counties, will meet at the Bladen County Senior Center at 3 p.m. Any adult who has experienced a loss of their child, grandchild or sibling is welcome to attend.

April 7

— Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church will host a barbecue plate fundraiser to benefit East Bladen High School football coach Robby Priest in the PAC building from 5 to 8 p.m. There will also be a silent auction. Plates will cost $8 each and will include barbecue, baked beans, slaw, rolls and dessert for eat-in or take out. T-shirts with the slogan #RobbyStrong can also be purchased through the Facebook group Fighting with Robby—#RobbyStrong. Priest is currently battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatments. All proceeds from the fundraisers will go to assist Priest and his family with medical expenses.

— Boost the ‘Boro will be holding its annual Spring Fling at the Bladenboro Farmers Market from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. with entertainment, food, vendors, raffles, and more.

— The Team Nathan Walking for a Cure organization will hold a community walk starting at 9:30 a.m. on the Bladenboro Historical Society grounds. Cost of the walk is $25 per person and includes a Team Nathan T-shirt. After the walk and a chance to meet Nathan, the group will make its way downtown to the Spring Fling.

— Bladen Community College will be holding a Career and Job Fair in the auditorium at 10 a.m.

April 9

— A Spring Special Storytime, with a story, crafts, food, and fun, will take place at Bridger Memorial Library and from 5:30-7 p.m. The program is most suitable for children ages 2-12. Call 910-863-4586 to register.

April 10

— Bladen Community College will host a Coffee House Poetry Reading event from 11 a.m. to noon and again from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. in the library, (building 7) on the Dublin campus. Participants may read their own or someone else’s poetry, or simply relax and enjoy the readings. The event is open to the public. No registration is necessary. — Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 901 W. Broad St. in Elizabethtown, will host a free program titled “Effective Communication Strategies” from 9 to 11 a.m. The public is invited to receive practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.

— The Bladen County Opioid Task Force will hold a “Harm Reduction Summit” at the Bladen County Health Department from 1 to 4 p.m.

— A Spring Special Storytime will be held at the Clarkton Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m., featuring food, fun, a story, and crafts. It is most suitable for children ages 2 to 12, and registration is available by calling 910-647-3661.

— Lower Cape Fear Hospice is offering a no-cost workshop called Kids, Teens, and Grief for the parents of children or teens coping with the death of a loved one. The workshop will be held from 3-4 p.m. at the Bladen County office, located at 116 W. Broad Street in Elizabethtown.

April 11

— The Bladen County Shrine Club will hold its annual fraternal fish fry at the Food Lion parking lot on West Broad Street in Elizabethtown. Plates will cost $8 each and consist of Whiting fillets, sweet potato fries, cole slaw and hush puppies.

April 12

— A community presentation sponsored by Eastpointe Managed Care Organization and titled “Opioid 101” will be held at the Bladen County Cooperative Extension office, located at 450 Smith Circle in Elizabethtown, from 10 a.m. to noon. There is no cost, but reservations are needed.

April 17

— Bladen Community College will be holding a Career and Job Fair in the auditorium from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. with dozens of other businesses and industries scheduled to participate.

— The Bladen Community College Board of Trustees will meet at noon in the boardroom of the Essic Williams Administration Building (building 10) on the Dublin campus. For more information, contact Missi Hester at 910-879-5502.

April 20

— The Bladen We Care Gala will take place at The Venue. Cost is $50 and attire is “island casual.”

— The 29th annual Byron H. Gooden Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Vineyard Golf at White Lake.

April 28

— The Bladen County Master Gardener volunteers will be having their annual Plant Sale at the Cape Fear Farmers Market in Elizabethtown from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A huge variety of N.C. grown trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and tomatoes will be available at reasonable prices. This is the only fundraiser the Master Gardeners have to sponsor two $500 scholarships for college-bound students with a focus in agriculture and to promote the Bladen County Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program.

— The annual Kelly Spring Fest will be held at the Kelly Ballpark and will feature the North Tower band starting at 11 a.m. A parade will kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. starting on Cassius Smith Road. — The Bladen County Training School – Bladen Central High School Alumni Association will hold its Minority Business Banquet at The Paul R. Brown Building on Martin Luther King Drive in Elizabethtown starting at 7:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Leroy Purdie, instructor at the Savannah (Ga.) campus of Phoenix University. May 5

Judging will be 1-2 p.m. and awards from 2-3 p.m. Entering a vehicle in the show is $25, and vendor space is available for $15 (no food vendors allowed).
