April 17

— Bladen Community College will be holding a Career and Job Fair in the auditorium from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. with dozens of other businesses and industries scheduled to participate.

— The Bladen Community College Board of Trustees will meet at noon in the boardroom of the Essic Williams Administration Building (building 10) on the Dublin campus. For more information, contact Missi Hester at 910-879-5502.

— The Bladen County Educational Foundation, a non-profit corporation organized and existing to provide financial help for the public schools and educators of Bladen County, will hold its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the public meeting room of the Bladen County Board of Education on U.S. 701 South in Elizabethtown. All members and other interested parties are asked to attend this meeting, and the same should not last more than 30 minutes. We will be discussing and making our final plans for the upcoming Jail-A-Thon, which will be held at the Board of Education on Thursday, April 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. All individuals who have an interest in and care about the public schools of Bladen County are urged and invited to attend this meeting.

April 20

— The Bladen We Care Gala will take place at The Venue. Cost is $50 and attire is “island casual.”

— A beginning genealogy group will meet at 1 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Bladen County Senior Center, 608 McLeod St. in Elizabethtown. Bring a notebook and a pencil and we’ll embark on a trip through time. For more information, call Carol Mitchell at 910-872-6331.

— Health Bladen Collaborative will hold its April meeting at the Health Department’s conference room at 9 a.m.

— The 29th annual Byron H. Gooden Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Vineyard Golf at White Lake.

April 28

— The Bladen County Department of Social Services will hold its ninth annual Child Abuse Prevention Event on the Bladen County Courthouse lawn. An Awareness Walk will begin at San Jose’s parking lot at noon and will end at the courthouse. Light refreshments and parent information packets will be provided. A balloon will be released for each child that lost their life due to abuse or neglect in North Carolina. Public is urged to attend.

— The Bladen County Master Gardener volunteers will be having their annual Plant Sale at the Cape Fear Farmers Market in Elizabethtown from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A huge variety of N.C. grown trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and tomatoes will be available at reasonable prices. This is the only fundraiser the Master Gardeners have to sponsor two $500 scholarships for college-bound students with a focus in agriculture and to promote the Bladen County Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program.

— The annual Kelly Spring Fest will be held at the Kelly Ballpark and will feature the North Tower band starting at 11 a.m. A parade will kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. starting on Cassius Smith Road. — The Bladen County Training School – Bladen Central High School Alumni Association will hold its Minority Business Banquet at The Paul R. Brown Building on Martin Luther King Drive in Elizabethtown starting at 7:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Leroy Purdie, instructor at the Savannah (Ga.) campus of Phoenix University. — The main branch of the Bladen County Public Library in Elizabethtown will host “Amazing Alligators,” a program for school-age children and their families, at 6:30 p.m. registration is recommended by calling 910-862-6990.

May 6

— A musical program will be hosted by Clarkton Presbyterian Church at 4 p.m. and contributions will benefit the Matthew 25 Center of Tabor City. The concert, organized by Randy Page, will feature musicians from Bladen and Columbus counties. The Matthew 25 Center of Tabor City is a nonprofit organization created to provide housing for families of incarcerated men and women when they come to visit their loved ones.

May 8

— Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 901 W. Broad St. in Elizabethtown, will host a free program titled “Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors” from 9 to 11 a.m. The public is invited.

May 24

— The main branch of the Bladen County Public Library in Elizabethtown will host a “Summer Perennials” seminar at 6:30 p.m. Nancy Olsen, a Bladen County Extension Office horticulture agent and Master Gardener volunteer coordinator, will be the guest speaker. Open to the public.
