KELLY — A week-long search came to an end Saturday when the body of a Fayetteville man was discovered floating in the middle of Singletary Lake shortly after noon.
Jesse Sgro, 23, went missing on April 6. He had come to Singletary Lake with a church group and was last seen on the lake in a canoe that Friday evening. When he did not return to the camp, members of his group began searching. It wasn’t until the next morning that Sgro was reported missing to park officials.
Over the next several days, hundreds of people — including volunteers, law enforcement, friends and family — searched in and around Singletary Lake in hopes of finding Sgro alive. But last in the week, the search was changed to a recovery operation. The efforts included air searches by Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and N.C. Highway Patrol helicopters, sonar search of the lake and K-9 units.
Sgro was discovered in 12 to 14 feet of water several hundred yards from the end of a pier. A state parks spokesperson said Sgro had removed some articles of clothing, apparently in an effort to swim.
