DUBLIN – Two students from Bladen Community College received awards at the National SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June.
From welding, Savannah Schmidt won first place and a gold medal. Sarah Allen took second place, earning a silver medal. This is the first national gold medal award for Bladen Community College.
Program director Edward Dent is proud of the two awards.
“It is inspiring to see two young women from Bladen County win first and second place in the nation for their skills in welding,” he remarked. “Our program continues to see a rise in non-traditional students. These particular two young women represent a growing community of welders who bring creativity and art to the skill.”
The national SkillsUSA competition is the world’s largest showcase of skilled trades. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from 600 national corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participate in the event.
The competition is for public high school and college/postsecondary students enrolled in career and technical education programs. SkillsUSA has a nationwide membership of over 300,000 students and showcases 100 hands-on skill and leadership contests, representing 130 different occupational areas.
