CLARKTON — Town Public Works Director Chris Hall says he is concerned about heavy vehicles damaging some underground piping in the area.

“They are out there using 4-wheel drive trucks over our water and sewer lines,” he said during Tuesday’s monthly meeting. “There is no demarcation between the town property lines.”

Town Clerk Kentrina Woods said she will look into finding out the property lines so it can be staked off.

The review of the quote from Charles Underwood Inc. for equipment at the wastewater treatment plant was discussed.

“These pumps were damaged during Hurricane Florence,” Hall told the board. “The rotating assemblies were damaged and not the actual pump housing. This will replace the one that was damaged and give us a spare one for parts.”

This will give them a backup so they can repair without having to track down any more parts.

“We will have this in the parts room,” said Hall. “This will maybe get us through the next 15 to 20 years.”

The League of Municipalities sent the town more funds to be used in recovery from Hurricane Florence and the budget amendment was approved.

Resident Linda Croom requested permission to remove the rose bushes from the town entrance sign.

“I want to remove the rose bushes at the entrance sign from Green Street to Elm Street,” she said, adding that they have not done well.

The utility bill that has been scrutinized over the last meeting for high usage is still incurring some of the high bills, which have gone unpaid. The board decided that shutting off the water was in order. Usage in the most recent month has been over $400 due to an unrepaired leak.

The two roofs of the town maintenance shop and the library, which was done by ACI Systems for over $16,000, have been deemed satisfactory.
