ELIZABETHTOWN — The 25-year-old accused of killing Crystal Cruz entered a guilty plea to three charges Monday, and was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison.

Marquail Burney, of Bladenboro, will serve a minimum of 30 years, four months in prison and no more than 38 years, five months. His guilty pleas were to second-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony larceny, a release from District Attorney Jon David’s office said.

Cruz’s body was found Oct. 13, 2015, in the trunk of a vehicle near the home of Burney’s father with gunshot wounds to the cheek, chest, arm and legs. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Burney was captured the next day in the parking lot of a Lumberton Walmart.

Burney, the release said, told investigators he was unhappy with Cruz and shot her multiple times as she sat on a counch. Inititally declared incapable of standing trial to due to lack of mental capacity, he received in-patient treatment at Central Regional Hospital, his capacity was restored and the criminal case against him was allowed to proceed.
