DUBLIN — The roundabout being constructed at the intersection of N.C. 41 and N.C. 410 will begin road closures on Monday.

The intersection closed earlier this year for preliminary work; this time it will shutter until finished in June.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced a nearly $1.76 million contract for the project. This is the intersection between Bladen Community College and West Bladen High School.

In spring of 2017, the DOT made it a four-way stop. Traffic analysis showed a high number od drivers on N.C. 410, the highway that fronts West Bladen, were pulling into the path of those on N.C. 41. The DOT said 60 percent of 31 crashes in the study involved angled collisions.

DOT officials said in a news release the four-way stop reduced crashes, and the roundabout is expected to improve safety and traffic flow.

The contract was awarded to BMCO Construction of Lumberton, which can begin work after June 25. Completion is expected in the summer of 2020.

Initially, the intersection will remain open. During most of the project, a detour will send drivers on N.C. 41 onto N.C. 131 and Center Road, while those on N.C. 410 will be directed to take Pleasant Garden Road.

Bladen Community College officials have been advising those coming to campus about the changes with Pleasant Garden Road.
