Ten honored with scholarships

BLADENBORO — Ten students were each awarded a $500 scholarship through the 19th annual Shipman Memorial Scholarship Fundraising Program.

The gifts were announced Nov. 30 at the annual banquet held at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church in the Sandhill community.

Those honored included:

• Abreana Brown, freshman at High Point University, majoring in pre-pharmacy. She’s the daughter of Andreana Williams.

• Makell Brown, freshman at UNC Chapel Hill, majoring in health science. He’s the son of Stephanie and Macon Brown.

• Janiya Cromartie, sophomore at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, majoring in biology. She’s the daughter of Sheena Blue and Marcus Cromartie.

• Jada Faison, freshman at UNC Pembroke, majoring in nursing. She’s the daughter of Clarice and Christopher Faison.

• Jermonte Fleming, freshman at Elizabeth City State University, majoring in aviation. He’s the son of Sonya and Jermaine Fleming.

• Maya Graham, freshman at N.C. A&T, majoring in journalism and mass communications, and in business administration. She’s the daughter of Cindy and Franklin Graham.

• D’Angelo Lacy, a student at the NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, majoring in automotive technology with NASCAR engines one and two. He’s the son of Sharbara Williams and Edward Lacy.

• Tahnijah McKoy, freshman at N.C. Central, majoring in business administration with emphasis on marketing. She’s the daughter of Erica Williams.

• Kianta Powell, freshman at Winston-Salem State University, majoring in social work. She’s the daughter of Latrice Hollingsworth and Bryan Powell.

• Michael Sturdivant, freshman at N.C. State, majoring in business administration. He’s the son of Betty and Eugene Sturdivant.

Memorial honorees were William Dewey Shipman Sr., Zenah Mae Clarida Shipman, William Dewey Shipman Jr., Dr. Andrakeia Shipman and Staff Sgt. Raunchy Wendell Shipman.

Since 2002, the Shipman fund has provided scholarships to 116 Bladen County students.

Cromartie, introduced by her father, served as mistress of ceremony and is a great-granddaughter. Jackquelyn Piggott of Northwood Church in Whiteville was the guest speaker, and the guest choir was from Kings Domain Praise and Worship Center, where Dr. Carlos Shipman is pastor.
