RALEIGH — The state Department of Transportation said Tuesday the coronavirus will impact projects scheduled for the next year.

There are none specifically in Bladen County on the list released, but there are some in adjacent counties.

DOT said traffic volumes have plummeted, causing a $300 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year ending June 30. DOT is funded through the Motor Fuels Tax, Highway Use Tax and DMV fees.

All but about 50 major projects in the next 12 months are being delayed. Those that are moving forward are funded by GARVEE bonds, BUILD NC bonds and federal grants.

The DOT is also taking other steps against expenditures. They include allowing only mission critical purchases, laying off temporary and embedded consultants, suspending or decreasing many programs and services, and a hiring freeze except for positions that impact public safety.

DOT is also developing plans for potential furloughs, and a reduction in force.
