DUBLIN — Bladen Community College has been nationally certified as an affiliate of Bee Campus USA.

The designation was announced by the college in coordination with Wednesday’s celebration of Earth Day. The college is one of more than 150 other campuses and cities that improve their landscapes for pollinators.

In a release, President Dr. Amanda Lee said, “Our students, faculty, and staff have long been champions for sustainable environmental practices. Our Green Technology committee has led efforts to make sure our campus is not only beautiful but also that we are good stewards of our trees, butterflies and now bees. Having dedicated, protected spaces and carefully maintained landscapes extends our classrooms as students and faculty learn more about science and what it takes to sustain a healthy environment.”

The college is mindful of dangerous pesticides and works to create a habitat for bees with native plants, the release said. Awareness of bees will be published by the college on its website and through its social media arms.

The Bee Campus USA program, along with Bee City USA, are initiatives of the nonprofit Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.
