CLARKTON — On Friday, Clarkton School of Discovery will be hosting the Durham-based African American Dance ensemble, an opportunity made possible through a N.C. Arts Council grant.

The lecture demonstration is a 45-minute compilation of dance, music, song, and poetry and provides an introduction to the cultural history of Africa and the diaspora. Examples of traditional African dance and music styles are interspersed with commentaries on the history and folklore. The performers wear authentic African-attire, and educational materials are available which describe the clothing, vocabulary, and dance.

Each grade level will participate in the lecture demonstration, a schedule for which is outlined below.

— 12:10-1 p.m., sixth grade

— 1:10-2 p.m., seventh grade

— 2-2:55 p.m. eighth grade
