CLARKTON — On Saturday, Dec. 3, members of Clarkton and surrounding communities gathered in Butler Memorial Park on a chilly evening for a festive celebration of Christmas.

Hearts and souls were warmed by fellowship with one another and everyone enjoyed refreshments at the local event hosted by the Clarkton Beautification Committee.

A highlight of the evening was the inaugural lighting of the tree by elders from the Clarkton community. Official tree lighters included were Mrs. Vida Cox, retired Bladen County school nurse; Mr. Peyton Royal, retired Clarkton Baptist Church minister; and Mr. Harold Ford, retired Clarkton High School principal and coach.

After the tree lighting, Christmas carols were led by local church choir members from the Clarkton Baptist Church, the Clarkton Presbyterian Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Later in the evening, hot cider, hot chocolate and home-made cookies were consumed by all.
